Soton MSA's AGM was the bomb.. Literally.. Who would've thought that the highlights were NOT the candidates themselves but rather the Q&A session that really grilled the outgoing committee?
Before the manifestos began, there was a budget presentation by the treasurer which was followed by the Q&A session, aimed at everyone in the comittee.. We juniors definitely didn't expect what was about to come.. They were bombarded with question after question about why did this or that happened and why didn't they do such and such.. Among the topics included were Prophet Muhammad's caricature, constitutional changes regarding family law in Malaysia and the layoffs from the university's primary job pool, TempBank.. Honestly, it really hit me hard that being in MSA doesn't mean that my sole responsibility lies just within the association.. It doesn't stop at updating the website, organizing events and making sure everyone gets free food everytime.. I'm expected to delve into the real world, take note of global developments and significantly expand my miniscule sphere of life that is limited to undergraduate life and it's ups and downs..
I guess what happened was indeed an eye opener to all, especially for us hopefuls vying for a place in the new committee.. There's definitely a lot more to being a committee member than just delivering a kick-a$$ speech and swaying the masses with charm and charisma.. What I truly admire is that despite the AGM being 30 minutes behind schedule, although the MC wanted to cut the session short, the president still insisted that the Q&A go on until most of the questions were asked.. Can you show me any other example of accountability and transparency?
And you know what.. I can't believe that I seriously considered about running for VP (before I won the webmaster post by default).. I think the pressure would kill me.. Besides, who needs the VP post when I can always run for my chess club's presidency.. Muahahaha.. Yup2, my gila kuasa streak is still alive and well.. There's a chess club AGM this Monday and I've expressed my interest to run.. Unfortunately, so does my team captain and I don't really feel confident enough to win against him.. But oh well, might as well go down in style, right? LOL :P
I express the deepest gratitude to the outgoing MSA committee and for us, your humble successors, we will have huge shoes to fill. Congratulations to the new committee and may we all strive to achieve the same, if not higher, level of excellence as shown by our seniors.
