Accounts of an Adolescent

Thursday, December 08, 2005

If you think the reason for my long hiatus from the blog means that nothing's happening in my life right now, you're dead wrong.

On Saturday, I went to Bristol for a religious talk, organized by Bristol University's MSSA.. Met some of my ex-collegemates there as well.. What really made the day significant was the unfortunate incident that happened right before we got there, but unfortunately I've been sworn to secrecy regarding this smashing news..

After the talk, our convoy initially wanted to go visit the Stonehenge in Salisbury, but since it was getting late, we took a detour to Bath instead.. Saw a few interesting buildings, like this one crescent-shaped castle that turned out to be the Royal Crescent Hotel :P

On Sunday, I intended to go for my first job interview.. Yup, I replied to a job advertisement in our uni's Islamic Society bulletin and they asked me to come over and meet them.. The job? Tutoring two kids, aged 9 and 11, in English, Science and Maths.. Unfortunately, I missed the bus so I called to say that I'd be late.. In the end, the meeting got postponed to next day :(

When I did get there (on time), I realized that their place was really close to this halal food store that we went to a lot.. I even had time to stock up on some instant noodles (Maggi mee!) and halal beef salami.. Afterwards, I went to the family's place for the meeting.. They are Muslims from Somalia and they've lived here in the UK for the last year.. They're really good people.. I explained to them that I didn't have any experience with the British curriculum, but they had no problems with that.. They told me to call them when I'm ready to teach :)

When I got home, I was greeted by the Malaysian flight ticket I had booked from Rex Air.. I smiled all the way from my mailbox back up to my flat.. However, my joy became shortlived the moment I saw my HSBC bank account balance :|

On Tuesday, I had a University Team B chess match against Salisbury.. The train from Southampton took 35 minutes to get there.. The town's pretty small, considering that it hosts one of the largest wonders of the world, namely the Stonehenge.. But I wasn't there for sightseeing.. Our opponents were the current division leader.. It was unfortunate that we lost the game 1.5-3.5 because if we had only won another match, it would've been a great morale boost to draw against the top team in the group :P

On Wednesday, I was getting ready to go to for my first day at work when I got the call saying that I'm only required to start in January.. Sigh :( I called my mom to say that I'm running out of money, but I told her not to worry because I don't foresee myself starving to death anytime soon.. yet :P

Today, I received my final Programming Principles coursework that looks like a killer Java program.. But the good news is that my Professional Issues assignment is progressing smoothly.. We're supposed to present a current ECS research by January and as of this morning, our team has successfully conducted a proper interview with an ECS staff who's helming a project we've chosen, called BluNotes :)

And you know what was the best thing that happened today? Petronas banked in this month's allowance today! :D

Alhamdulillah.. God certainly has His ways of testing your nerves ;)
