Accounts of an Adolescent

Yesterday was another eventful day.. Remember what I said about not having gone through a single fire alarm in my hall? Scrap that, I just had one yesterday.. The wardens who were standing all over the compound were unusually calm and collected, which gave away the fact that apparently it was just a fire drill.. Thank goodness it was at 8am, not in the middle of the night, so you could say we had one loud (unstoppable) alarm clock ringing us out of Dreamland :P

Went to my Programming Principles lab where I submitted my work from last week's lab.. There's a guy called D in my tutor group.. When I first met him, I knew that he was one of those high-flying man-of-the-hour types who'd conquer the attention of everybody in the room.. He's really outspoken and apparently knows what he's doing.. That is, of course, until I started to realize that he probably thinks a bit less of other people (well, particularly me).. So today, he came up to me and S while we were completing our programming work.. Then he dissected our codes and 'expertly' said how wrong our methods were, yadda yadda yadda.. So just to shut him up, I asked him how he did his project..

(The following dialogue contains computing jargon. You've been warned.)

D : "You're doing this wrong. You're not supposed to use Strings to do this program. You have to use Objects. That's how I did it."

Me : "Why do you say our code uses Strings? We're still using Objects. We just use the Objects' Strings to compare stuff. Look here,"(refers to code)

D : (pauses) "Oh, right. I didn't see that. Yeah, you did it the same way as I did. Well, gotta go, cya!" (walks off to the other side of the lab)

:)

So yeah, my target now is to beat D throughout each and every semester. He may be in the Space Cadets group but that's not gonna deter me. You just wait and see.

BTW, my Team B chess match yesterday ended at 11pm.. Gosh, that's such an ungodly hour to play chess.. Anyway, our team lost 1-4 again, this time to Eastleigh C.. Sigh :(

This morning I had a Discrete Maths test.. It only had 5 questions, but God knows how I struggled through them all.. In the end, I didn't get to finish the last question.. Oh well, looks like I'll have to work harder to achieve my aforementioned target.. LOL :P

Tonight, I'll be leaving for the Notts Games.. It only dawned on me just now that for as long as I've been here in Southampton, I've been on a winless streak ever since my first chess club meeting.. That doesn't bode too well for my upcoming matches tomorrow, especially since I'm not really good at lightning chess :S

Wish me luck :)
