Accounts of an Adolescent

Wednesday, August 17, 2005

OK, so I can fly.. But you know what? Knowing that a lot of your friends aren't going with you just sucks.. I know lots of people are going to call me a wuss, but I actually cry myself to sleep sometimes thinking how the heck am I going to survive in a foreign land all by myself.. The thing is, I've always been a pretty spoiled child when it comes to leaving home.. I entered a boarding school back in Form One for a grand total of ten days before I came back home, teary-eyed.. And throughout my two years doing A-Levels, the longest that I've stayed in college without going home is 3 weeks.. The fact is, I'm already starting to miss home.. I'm starting to miss my mom and dad, my obnoxious brothers, my crazy friends.. I'm already feeling homesick, yet I'm still on home soil!

Things I Want To Do Before I Fly

1) Tell my parents I love them everyday.
2) Tell my middle brother I love him someday.
3) Show my youngest brother I love him everyday.
4) Call or meet long-lost friends and say I appreciate them.
5) Get a digital camera so I can send pictures (of myself sobbing?) back home.
6) Keep in touch with ex-students from my IT class before their SPM.
7) Meet my grandfather and ask for his blessings.
8) Prioritize my preparations so I don't get too flustered.
9) Learn to cook proper food.
10) Stop crying.

Homesickness is natural. Frankly, i already got homesick coming to KYUEM with the thought that the last 6-month holiday I had (after school ended) was the last long stretch of time that I would spend at home. Think about it, the moment you're into college you've already got one foot out of the house, and once you fly, chances are the 'home' you once knew won't be 'home' for long, since you'll be getting your own place once you come back. The beauty of everything, however, is that even with both feet outside the house that belongs to your parents, you'll always be an integral part of your lives. Homesickness is not incurable. The pain will lessen with time. Good luck overseas!

Thanks for the advice :)
