I went to the Education UK expo today at the KL Convention Centre.. I was expecting a huge crowd just like the one during PC Fair but I was pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong.. Not only could I breath properly, I didn't get bumped by anybody at all.. *gasp!* :O
OK, so maybe that's an exaggeration.. The new convention centre might not be such an evil place afterall, provided that the crowd's reasonable.. But I swear I will never ever go to another PC Fair unless PIKOM decides to change venues :P
Anyway, today I met a few of my (ex-)collegemates.. But the highlight of the day was my meeting with Mr. Eric C. Cooke, Senior Tutor of the Electronics and Computer Science school in Southampton University.. He totally rocks! He's very friendly and he happened to remember me from my UCAS application :) Plus, he's also extremely humble, even when I told him that some of his existing students call him a 'living legend' :P FYI, he'll be teaching a few modules to all first-year Computer Science students.. Gosh, I can't wait to join his class.. Am I developing classics symptoms of a student-teacher crush here? :D
Afterwards, there was a pre-departure briefing done by the British Council.. The talk was fun and interactive, but most of the stuff presented were things I had already read about.. But anyway, I met with G who's going to Southampton with me and after the talk, we went to Southampton's booth (my 3rd visit by then) and got copies of help guides on how to fill up our visa application forms.. Sweet! Thank God I went back to the booth with G.. I think Mr. Cooke looked at me a bit odd by then, but if I didn't go there, I wouldn't have gotten my hands on those guides :)
Came back home pretty late.. But get this, I'm going there again tomorrow.. Yup, this time with great company ;)
Sometimes I can't believe how lucky I am.. I met up with a fellow Petronas scholar from KMB.. She was surprised to hear that our sponsor allowed us A-Level students to fly off to UK.. You see, in June, lots of her UK-bound friends from KMB were redirected to Australia and New Zealand instead, causing quite a huge uproar among the ranks of parents and students.. Looking back, I can't help but feel the power of Allah.. Everything happens for a reason.. If A-Level results were announced a couple of months earlier, or if the British pound didn't devalue due to the London bombings, we would've been redirected..
Not to say that those universities aren't good.. I'm sure that they're wonderful in their own right.. But after meeting Mr. Cooke and all the new and current students of Southampton University, I'm filled with overwhelming anticipation.. I know I'm going to cry like a baby and start missing all sorts of things (and mainly people) as soon as I walk through the departure gates of KLIA, but you know what?
I can't wait :)
