Accounts of an Adolescent

I've been a huge fan of the Survivor series, and when ntv7 abruptly ended its run on national TV (read: 2 episodes before Season 9's finale) I was deeply disappointed.. Not only did they lack the courtesy to tell the viewers why the series has been cut off the air, the station left us hanging loose week after week.. They never told us when they would continue airing those last 2 episodes, nor did they tell us whether they'd be airing the latest Season 10..

Well, guess what.. Season 10 is now in its 7th episode in the US, and we Malaysians are left clueless.. 'Saluran ceria anda', huh? Gimme a break :P

Well, for what it's worth, ntv7 did a great job bringing us 9 and a half seasons of Survivor, so kudos for that.. But their unprofessional conduct when they haphazardly cancelled the show is just appalling..

So I resorted to my trusted mIRC program and proceeded to download bootleg copies of Survivor 10 off the Net.. hehe.. Now I have all 7 episodes and I've got to say, this is one of the most interesting seasons I've ever seen.. To start it all off, this time around there are 20 contestants as opposed to 16 or 18 in previous seasons.. With such a huge group, you would've thought that this season would be particularly lengthy, but I was delightfully surprised..

In the first episode, the show's host, Jeff Probst, explained to the contestants, who were rowing their boat in the middle of the sea, that there are 2 immunity necklaces that would keep them safe for the duration of the game.. They were located at their designated camp site and the first male and female to grab them would win them! The announcement resulted in a quick dash for those necklaces.. 2 contestants who were feeling restless decided to jump off the boat and swim instead, only to learn that the boat was actually faster than their own freestyle swimming.. Stupid people :P

Then there was an interesting twist when the group was divided into 2 tribes.. Each tribe would consist of 9 people.. Since there were 20 of them, it meant 2 people would automatically be voted off.. The 2 contestants who previously won immunity would form 2 different tribes and they got to choose the next person for their own tribe.. Once the other person has been chosen, the power to choose the next tribe member would fall on the chosen one.. So in a way, power shifts from one person to the next.. Way cool.. In the end, the second last tribe member would ultimately choose who gets voted off.. Ingenious, IMHO..

So what's happened after 7 episodes? The longest losing streak in Survivor history.. Since the beginning of Survivor 10, the Ulong tribe has never won a single immunity challenge, so from 9 people, they're now down to 2 :P

I think one of the Survivor milestones I've experienced is seeing a Muslim contestant performing his prayers.. It's true, one of the contestants in Survivor 10 is a Muslim.. I used to think it's impossible for Muslims to join Survivor.. How were they supposed to pray? When the tribe wins alcohol or non-halal meat during reward challenges, how would they share the reward? When girls (and guys :P) start walking around nude around their camps, how would they look away?

But seeing him praying on air with the barest of necessities really showed that no matter how remotely desolate your conditions are, prayers must always come first.. Iskk.. Insaflah Dayah.. Huhu.. :P But then, while he was praying, his aurat wasn't exactly covered completely.. And he had tatoos - a star and a crescent - on his biceps.. Hmm.. Not really a good portrayal of a Muslim, huh?

I don't care if people think my obsession with Survivor is a waste of time.. I love Survivor! :)
