There's a lot of buzz about the college replacing all our chalet computers with new one.. I don't feel too good about it.. I mean, don't get me wrong.. I was among those who contributed to the thunderous applause after the announcement was made during the last assembly.. But I've had a short discussion with Mr. Z about the appalling state of our wireless network.. He said the admin's argument was that our chalet computers were outdated and inappropriate for wireless networking.. But he also realized that a lot of students were using their own laptops.. So how come we still can't get through?
I can't believe that the IT department's putting most of the blame on our own 'faults', like downloading spyware and other supposedly useless junk i.e. movies, MP3s, etc.. When I stepped foot into this college, I didn't see any rules saying that you're not allowed to download all these 'junk'.. In fact, if you flip through the college rules, there's nothing that governs what you can or can't do with chalet computers.. The only form of guidelines that we got was the talk by the IT exec during induction week.. I clearly remember her saying that pornographic material is a no-no, but I don't believe she said anything else about other types of downloadable content.. So what exactly aren't we allowed to do, if I may ask?
The Internet problem in college dates back way before our juniors were admitted.. It's been there even when we were using LAN cables.. Like what was presented last Friday, the problem wasn't in the college's internal network, it was in the Internet access.. We could see each other's computers in our Network Neighbourhood but we couldn't access a single web page.. Somehow, I don't think I'm convinced by what we were told on Friday.. They said our spyware and excessive downloading was bogging down the servers.. But why didn't we see any statistics of our college's server usage? We were shown a diagram of chalet computers that were still connected to the network at 2 am.. But what about those computers' data flow? How much data was being transferred by all those computers at that time? What proof do they have to claim that leaving our computers on are causing the bottleneck to our college servers?
What I'd like to see is improvement.. Action speaks louder than words.. If they think they know what they're doing and we students are just a bunch of whiny idiots, fine.. Prove us wrong by solving the problem.. From what I see, the college has been spending more than half a million over the last year but the problem has only gone from bad to worse.. I'm tired of waiting and at this point, I frankly don't care anymore.. Buying new computers is a commendable move.. I suppose it's their way of shutting us up :P
I scored 2 points out of 3 today for my chess tourney.. Wish me luck for the next 2 rounds :)
