Today's the start of the 3-day PCMM Open chess tournament.. Last Sunday, I also joined CAS's Allegro and I only scored a measly 2 points out of 6 :P So you can understand why I don't really expect to win anything this time around :P
After two rounds, I've now scored one point.. I lost the first round to an ex-champion before winning the second round.. And the way I won it was so funny.. You see, there's a new FIDE rule that if your handphone rings during a game, you automatically lose that match.. So to cut a long story short, my opponent was comfortably attacking my position when - lo and behold - his phone rang! He sheepishly stood up and went off for awhile.. Me and everybody around us chuckled quietly as everyone stared at him piercingly.. I didn't have the heart to say 'You lose!' because I was the one who's losing! So I kept quiet and, well, continued staring :P
Then, with a soft voice, he resigned.. "OK la, kali ni saya kalah la."
God, I felt so bad for him :(
After signing our scoresheets, we decided to continue the game anyway.. Then after a while, he made a blunder and right after I captured one of his pieces, he retracted his move, mumbled a few sentences as he pointed furiously across the chess board and finally he said, "This should've been a drawn game."
Whatever.. Alhamdulillah for that 1 point :P
Almost everybody in the hall knew that I won because of the phone ring.. Even when I submitted the results to the arbiter, he asked, "Was it your opponent's handphone that rang?" :P Aunt S even commented that I shouldn't feel bad about it at all..
I bet my opponent must be screaming at his caller by now :P
