9 Oxbridge-bound.. and counting :)
I've been a huge fan of Celine Dion since I first heard her hit song, Because You Loved Me, which was the soundtrack of Up Close And Personal.. She can reach those impossibly high notes effortlessly and I'm totally in love with her remarkable voice..
When I first heard about her production "A New Day..." in Las Vegas, I knew I had to watch it.. Since then, it's been my lifelong dream to be able to see her perform live, especially in such a grand production.. It's being held at the new custom-built Colosseum, Caeser's Palace.. Our very own Anita Sarawak used to work there before Celine signed a 3-year contract to perform there.. I wonder if Anita's departure and Celine's appearance are interrelated.. hmmm :P
So today, my wish has come true.. Well, in a way.. Star World aired Celine Live in Vegas today.. It's a one-hour showcase of her opening night, hosted by Justin Timberlake.. I was glued to the screen the whole 60 minutes.. Her voice is perfect.. Although I didn't particularly like her choice of songs, each of them complemented the elaborate choreography well..
I especially loved this set where Celine flew.. In the midst of her slow ballad, she was lifted into the air and through every angle of the camera shots, you just cannot see any wires at all.. It's almost as if she was flying for real! The misty lighting gave a surreal feel to it.. There was a few dancers around her spinning elegantly mid-air.. As she hit the last note of her song, the whole atmosphere was not unlike angels in flight :)
The rest of the show was pretty passable.. Like I said, some of my favourite songs weren't in, but still it was just a 1-hour showcase, a quarter of the real thing.. There were complaints about her boyish haircut on the Internet, but I can't imagine her singing and dancing for about 4 hours all over the stage with long tresses :P
The TV showcase managed to pacify me somewhat.. But my dream's still intact, nonetheless :)
