Accounts of an Adolescent

Monday, December 20, 2004

Sorry I haven't been updating for a whole week.. Actually I went to my mom's hometown in Alor Star over the weekend to attend my cousin KD's wedding.. We stayed over at the Holiday Villa for 3 days 2 nights..

The trip was long and I duly dozed off for the majority of the duration.. As soon as we arrived, my brother and I scoured the City Point Shopping Centre and the nearby shops where I saw some really good bargains on clothes.. Clothes.. heh.. I never thought I'd see the day when I would actually go shopping for clothes :P

Anyway, last weekend I observed the preparations for KD's wedding.. In all honesty, watching her just made me relive my childhood dreams of getting married myself :P Hehe.. Oh, c'mon, I believe every girl has had that same dream at some point in her young life.. When I saw KD's beautiful wedding dresses, grand pelamin (dais), wonderfully decorated bedroom and various hantaran (wedding gifts), I couldn't help imagining how it would feel like if I was in her shoes..

The akad nikah ceremony was held on Saturday at the mosque near KD's house.. She looked resplendid in her gold kebaya with her hair pinned up into an elegant sanggul (bun) with two yellow carnations completing her hairdo.. When she put on her white knitted selendang (shawl), she looked every bit like a radiant blushing bride :)

When the ceremony went underway, the groom was 'interrogated' by the tok kadi on Islamic marriage rules and fortunately he managed to scrap hiw way through :P Then the solemnization begun and he only needed to proclaim it once.. When KD started to weep, it struck me real deep.. Why did she cry? I asked one of KD's friends who were with me and she simply answered "Because now she's a wife."

After the ceremony, the groom's mom a.k.a. KD's mother-in-law fastened a gold necklace around KD's neck before everyone took countless pictures of the happy couple. Then, everybody proceeded to KD's house for some light refreshments.. That was when the couple sat at the far end corner of the living room, uninterrupted.. I guess they warranted some private time for themselves.. It must be hard after weeks of planning and catering to every family members' whim and fancy.. At last, they had some time alone.. Sometimes, I'd steal a glance and I'd see the groom feeding his wife.. Awwww.. That's so romantic! :')

The groom was supposed to bring his wife back for the - ehem - night to the hotel where he and his family was staying.. But after my aunt doggedly persuaded him to spend the night at KD's place, he did, despite the customs of his people.. Owh, I forgot to include that he's Pakistani and my mom says their men are usually quite possessive :P

Gosh, attending KD's wedding was like witnessing a fairy tale come true.. Yeah, I know, there's far more to marriage than a simple 'happily ever after' ceremony.. And I'm sure many married people are yearning for their single, carefree days while I'm fantasizing on my dream wedding :P

But wouldn't it be nice to let your imagination run free? All the way back to Shah Alam, I sat in the car, looking out of the window, pondering.. What would my dream wedding be like? What about my dream proposal?

I used to sneakily read my mom's collection of romance novels and I totally loved this ending where the hero brought the heroine to Victoria Falls.. Then he bent on one knee, taking the heroin by surprise, and presented a beautiful diamond ring as he asked her to marry him..

Waaaaaaaaaaa....

But like I mentioned, it was the ending of a romance novel.. And everybody knows full well that in reality, weddings aren't endings, but beginnings..
