Last year, I managed to elude our college's mini marathon by going to a chess competition held by CAS.. Not only did I spare myself from the physical torture, I also snagged the top prize for my category.. So last year's 'marathon' was indeed a memorable one for me..
This year, I intend to do the same.. There'll be a chess competition held in nearby Kuala Kubu Bharu on the same day as the marathon and I was thinking that luck was on my side once again.. Till I received news from Mr. M that our chess club trip was not approved by Pn. R.. The marathon's compulsory for all students and that's final..
Mr. M, J and I went to see Mr. S to plead our case.. In the end, he allowed us to go - provided that we finish our marathon.. What the..???
I wanted to retaliate.. I wanted to jump up and down, screaming at him.. But of course I didn't.. I knew full well that my devious plan had been thwarted fair and square.. The only way for me to weasel my way out of this is to play by their rules..
I must run.
The plan now is for us to start - and complete - our run quickly so that we can leave for KKB as soon as possible.. The question is, how the heck am I going to attempt that? The last time I ran was 3 years ago and even then I finished in the bottom 50.. How am I supposed to get back to college on time for the chess tournament? And how the heck do they expect us to play 6 rounds of solid chess after a 7-kilometre run?
But what if the unthinkable happened.. What if a chess club member actually won the marathon and later went to KKB to win the chess tournament there?
Now that, my friend, is wishful thinking :P
