Accounts of an Adolescent

Thursday, July 08, 2004

I only found out today that what H told me earlier about my posts not appearing was true.. I didn't decide to stop writing after July 01, it's just that my latest 2 posts decided not to appear themselves.. Hmm.. Maybe they were shy.. Or maybe I was too lazy to actually check out my own blog.. I only got to know about the problem when I typed out the URL in my own web browser :P

Sorry H :)

Remember the post where I wrote about this forum thread on KYUEM? (Heh, of course you do.. It WAS the July 01 entry, tsk :P).. Well, it seems that a lot my collegemates have found the thread as well and each of them are giving their own brand of tips on how to survive in KYUEM.. It's good that so many people are willing to help our juniors find out as much as possible about the college..

But one thing really irks me.. Why must there be so much '-isms'? Example? House-ism.. Sponsor-ism.. Back in my old school the only affiliations I had was with my house on Sports Day (go Suria!) and with my class during inter-class competitions.. In KYUEM, it's like a totally different ballgame.. Allegiances have grown to the scale that rivals secret societies.. I had an enlightening chat with Z the other day and he pointed out that almost all residential schools have that kind of spirit in them, but the way certain people in our college are going about it is pretty extreme.. Something I'd readily vouch for.. OK, so maybe my house, Sapphire is more low-key compared to Diamond, Garnet or (especially) Topaz.. And it's not like I'm going to launch a whole promo stint for Sapphire any time soon.. I admit that certain houses have more interesting individuals than others, but it doesn't mean that everybody else is necessarily inferior compared to you.. I know you don't really mean it that way, but when other people (e.g. me) read what you've written, they can't help but feel like bursting your overblown head.. With a bullet..

The same goes with those under common sponsors, i.e. Petronas, PSD, MARA, BNM, etc.. Don't get me wrong.. I'm proud to be a Petronas scholar.. But I don't really think I'm better than any one of my JPA or MARA counterparts.. Others say that BNM scholars are the best, because after going through two gruelling interviews, in the end only 10 or so scholarships are awarded, so it's the hardest one to get.. If that's the case, let's say that somebody managed to score JPA, Petronas and BNM scholarships.. Then that person chooses JPA for his own personal reasons.. Does that make him second fiddle?

I remember when I set foot at KYUEM last year, I was quite taken aback by all these collective sentiments.. But you know what? I can only deduce that it's because the juniors are coming.. This is the time where the seniors do all they can to rally as many new 'recruits' into their respective camps, so that traditions can be passed on.. But in a way, I still think that next week's induction programme would only serve as an opportunity for the seniors to stamp their authority by gaining the largest number of 'followers'.. Popularity becomes the measurement of success.. Let me quote what one of my esteemed collegemate wrote in the KYUEM forum thread :

"u just come ere first and leave the rest to us.....just make sure that u are very close to seniors.....dun afraid to be called suck up.......hahaha

if u hav any problems plz go to student services or meet members of theStudent Council or any seniors...dun wori they'll help u all.the most important thing is find me in KYUEM........hahahahahahha"

What the heck is that? Just because you're an SC and you're conducting the induction week, does it means the juniors have to come running to you as if you're a superstar? Well, OK, so the large remainder of his post was mostly helpful information for the juniors.. But after reading this, I have this sick notion that our batch will turn out to be the most fame-seeking bunch of seniors KYUEM has ever known.. And I can't say that I'm excluded..

OK, so I'm a bit jealous that I'm not in the SC right now. Sue me.

The thing is, I have the utmost respect for N, my UK-bound senior.. She probably doesn't know me at all, but I've heard so many good things about her.. She's good at debating, chess, and she narrowly lost the race for the senior SC's female vice-presidency.. I got to know of these from my friends and sometimes with my own eyes.. None of these claims came out of her own mouth.. In fact, to me she's very quiet, but you can tell that she's intelligent.. Now that is what I call humility.. Although I regret not having the chance to get to know her better, she's taught me to let my actions speak for themselves.. Something I'll try to remember when the juniors come around :)
