Accounts of an Adolescent

Tuesday, April 27, 2004

T's also going to sit for the IELTS exam earlier.. She still hasn't recovered from her flu, so she skipped all her classes from 10am onwards.. While we were in the cafe, we discussed about the report on the one-week job attachment to KYSM.. Apparently, the whole college has read it or at least knows about it.. Almost the whole student community's on our side.. Everybody wants us to deliver some choice words to the bursar when we meet him soon.. From what I heard, the top guns of the college had a meeting at 9pm and at 10, he told Mr. R that he wanted to meet us students.. Gulp.. I'm definitely not so thrilled with the idea.. From the looks of things, I can only imagine that the bursar's going to fight tooth and nail just to keep the college coffers untouched, while our group has been thrust with the obligation of getting all our IT equipment replaced, thus spending thousands of the the college's funds.. Hmm..

H made quite a furore by posting on the college notice board about a supposed mismanagement of funds.. Presumably from the bursar's side.. For all that, he got censored by the Student Services.. Hmm.. I guess freedom of speech just isn't that big here in KYUEM :P

But with all the bad rap towards the bursar, it would be a miracle for our group to hold a fruitful discussion with him.. Like what T and I discussed about.. He's sure to be highly defensive against whatever it is that we're proposing.. And T reminded me that we shouldn't act as if we're higher than the bursar in terms of standard.. Whatever happens between us, he's still the head honcho of this place.. So we better keep that in mind - ingrained, if possible - so that tempers wouldn't flare..

Mr. R says that the bursar would contact him tomorrow to set the meeting time with him.. Hopefully everything will go well.. Personally, I didn't think that a measly one-week job attachment could result to such huge repercussions.. The most I did during my stay in KYSM was to conduct a quiz on some kids.. And now I need to fight against the bursar? What is this? The most I expected from that job attachment was a slightly improved personal statement for my UCAS application, not some all-out war against the college administration.. What we wrote in that report was just what we observed and the measures we had recommended were simply that.. Recommendations.. But now there's talk that even the head of our college's Board of Governors has read the report and the college is considering electing student representatives in the IT Department.. Whoaaa..

I truly believe that the whole commotion surrounding the report is nothing more than a means for certain parties to climb up the ladder of power.. Or else, it wouldn't have been this controversial in the first place.. I firmly think that we students have no say on how the college should be run and it should be left to the people who are capable of doing it.. I agree with what T told me, who are we to judge them? There are so many 'behind-the-scenes' factors that we don't know about.. Are we that great to actually demand something that isn't even a necessity (except for me, tsk) as compared to a possible loss of jobs?

Whatever the outcome of the whole meeting might be, I really hope that we wouldn't get into too much trouble with the college..
