Accounts of an Adolescent

Friday, March 05, 2004

Man.. I had less than 5 minutes to get to the exam hall just now so I was practically running from my chalet to the Great Hall.. As I got closer to its compound, I saw nearly a hundred seniors waiting in front of the hall.. Darn.. I could feel all the glances piercing into me.. I became so nervous everytime I had to walk in front of them.. Getting breathless after my mini-sprint didn't help much, either.. Well, since the day I signed up to be the only junior taking the Accounting AS paper, I was expecting to be the odd one out.. But actually being it was far more difficult than I had thought.. My paper coincided with a Physics option paper and almost every notable senior pursuing engineering was there.. Which means almost half of the senior batch :P

Even my pet bro was there.. Luckily he was there to back me up when one of the other seniors started asking if I was taking the same Physics option as well :P I was praying to God for the other 2 seniors, who were taking the same Accounting paper as I was, to show up ASAP.. But I guess it was left unanswered as the invigilators called us in at 11.20pm.. Both of them were still nowhere to be found..

As everybody entered the hall, I hastily got to my seat.. I stared blankly ahead as I sat on the leftmost row - alone - because I was afraid that if I even spared a glimpse to my right, I'd see pairs of eyes quizzically staring back at me.. Mr. K dropped by to wish me good luck.. And then the examination started.. The questions in itself were OK - neither hard nor easy.. But coupled with the paranoia of sitting amongst the seniors, every question proved to be extra challenging :P

And to make matters worse, both of the Accounting seniors didn't show up.. So I remained alone.. Some of the invigilators, including Mr. R, my Computing teacher, kept orbiting me like the Moon to the Earth.. Then around 5 minutes to 12.15pm, one of the invigilators said "5 minutes left."

Huh, what?

"For Physics students only," he jested.

By then, I was filled with anxiousness.. Firstly, I was left with 15 minutes to finish my paper.. Secondly, I was about to be left alone in that huge hall.. I tried to focus on my paper.. But when they all started to leave, I couldn't help looking at them.. Occasionally, I'd see some of them gesturing towards me as they talked to their friends.. Darn..

So there I was.. Mr. F purposely bellowed from the middle of the hall "You have 5 minutes left".. And after I passed up my question paper and answer sheet, he asked to "leave according to row, please".. Ha-ha.. Very funny..

I used to kid around with my friends that I'd be receiving 'personal attention' in the exam hall.. I guess now the joke's on me.. And it's not just the senior engineers who would've seen me 'in action'.. I'll be sitting for my Accounting paper 2 on Wednesday morning.. Together with the senior medics taking their Biology papers.. So I guess by the end of my mock exams, almost every senior would be talking about the sole junior in the exam hall :P
