Accounts of an Adolescent

Friday, February 04, 2005

Today's assembly saw the official handover ceremony of our new Student Council.. After weeks of lobbying for votes, finally the new select group of students have been chosen.. I won't bore you all with the itsy bitsy details of the election because I'm sure you can find them elsewhere..

The truth is, I don't like where Veritas is going nowadays.. The college's newsletter that used to be my pride and joy has now become.. well.. different.. OK, so maybe that's an understatement.. Granted, I can't deny that I miss the days when I would SMS my crew at 12 midnight sharp to give 'friendly' reminders to hand in their articles.. I miss the days where we'd sit together at the cafe celebrating yet another successful edition of Veritas.. I miss Mr. Fellender's.. well.. punctuality and sarcasm? :)

I know that times change and I must accept the fact that Veritas no longer belongs to me and my friends.. It's now in the hands of my pet bro A and his team of capable writers.. Yet, I can't help feeling that they're moving downhill fast.. They've only published ONE edition over the 6 months they've taken over and they've barely started on the next edition, supposedly due in March..

OK, so maybe I'm biased.. When a leader doesn't bark at his team to do things, I tend to label that as a failure.. I know some people don't work that way, but somehow, seeing how relaxed A is with his team makes me feel uneasy.. He says he doesn't want to be too harsh on them yet.. Well, hello?? You rejected a few articles written by your own team because you deemed them to be of 'poor quality' and you're afraid that people might not like you??

I also don't like the fact that a certain someone is taking liberty with Veritas's integrity to snoop on everything under the sun.. He's been bugging so many people about so many things, all in the name of Veritas.. For the record, Veritas IS NOT a one man show.. When you write something for Veritas, you're writing on behalf of the whole Veritas team and whatever you convey, it would reflect on everybody else in the team.. The thing is, he writes as if he's the only person on Earth who's right and everybody else's opinion doesn't matter..

There's this one article where he blasted the college community for opting to have lunch in our usual chattering ways and thus choosing to 'ridicule democracy' by ignoring the lunch event with the SC candidates.. Since when did the voters have to please the candidates, because I've always thought that if they wanted to win our vote, they had to appeal to us, not the other way round..

Honestly, I think that Veritas is turning into this one huge tabloid.. Maybe I'm at fault for starting the so-called revolution of free speech, but I never thought that things would turn out like this.. And there's absolutely nothing I can do about it..

Or is there?

haha.

my sentiments exactly, o our great editor!

on the subject of your petbro A, it remains to be seen how he handles his mounting responsibilites and ascertain his priorities. we can only hope that Veritas is not sidelined.

or taken over by the one-man journalism army ;)
but i must admit, nickypang's posts are enjoyable to read. eventhough he can be a little harsh sometimes. even by my standards. heh.
