Accounts of an Adolescent

Sunday, July 25, 2004

There's a big 'For Sale' sign hung in front of my house.. Since my dad took up a new job as a real estate agent, my parents have never been more dilligent in disposing the house that we've lived in for the last 12 years.. My mom wants to find another place which is smaller, considering my brother and I would be leaving for further studies soon.. I hope it doesn't come too soon, though.. Our house in Shah Alam means so much to me.. We moved in from Seremban and I remembered that I had a huge bout of pneumonia that left me bed-ridden for a good one month.. All this was because of the dusty carpeting that was used to cover all the floors.. I even remembered asking my mom, with my wheezing voice, if we could move out of the place..

But after years living in Shah Alam, I can't imagine myself being at any other place.. After so many bittersweet memories, it'd be hard to let it all go.. But like I've said so many times before, change is inevitable..

I went to school for my Visual Basic class.. At first, only 2 students came.. By then, I was already feeling demoralized.. But 15 minutes later, a whole drove of 15 students came in and I could immediately sense a broad smile creeping upon my face :) I guess I really enjoy teaching large numbers of students.. Which is kind of odd considering more and more institutions are gearing for smaller teacher-student ratios..

So many things have changed.. Although parts of the school remained just the way I left it, there were so many new additions here and there.. Almost all the walkways in the school are now named, e.g. Laluan Mokhtar Dahari, Anjung Impian/Idaman (I forgot which one :P).. Even the dirty staircase at the back of the canteen where I used to stand duty is now beautifully painted and - you guessed it - named : "Sudut Bacaan" ("Reading Corner").. Lots more covered walkways were built.. Now, my school looks so beautiful.. No wonder it won the award for Sekolah Harapan Negara at state level and is now running for the national title.. I bumped into Mr. R, my former Art teacher.. He was equally surprised to find out that I was at school to teach.. On my way home, he greeted me with "Dah nak balik, cikgu?" ("Going home, teacher?") :)

During Form 5, I had a crush on our school's former computer lab assistant, S.. In an attempt to see more of him, I purposely left my personal notebook - complete with my full name, contact number and e-mail address - at the lab right after my IT class ended.. As I waited for something - anything - to happen, a student walked into my classroom and asked me to go to the computer lab.. Score! My tactic worked flawlessly.. With the best look of innocence I could muster, I went to the lab.. S told me that I had forgotten something and I bashfully held out my hand to take the notebook from him.. Man, that was the epitome of boldness for me :P

So when I accidentally left my handphone at the computer lab this morning, with Mr. IT still in the lab, I couldn't help but think of the good old days ;)

Gosh, I miss school..
