I'm at home now after spending 6 days in KYSM for my job attachment.. Basically, my tasks included network rewiring, software and hardware troubleshooting, conducting classes and doing a fair bit of research on e-learning.. So what do I think of the time spent there?
[ POSITIVES ]
1) The food was superb!
Hehe.. trust me to begin any topic with food in mind.. I've never had even one unsatisfactory meal here.. From nasi beriyani to chicken rice, continental breakfast to fried mee, I must say the highlights of my whole week was the food :) Always looked forward to eating here.. It made their cafe look redundant.. Except when we missed mealtimes, of course :P
2) The teachers are pretty cool
- If you happen to be an ex-student of KYSM.. E, of the year 98-02 Crackerz batch, was undeniably the star of the group among the staff.. But over the one week period, they started to warm up to the rest of us.. IMHO, chatting with the staff on the last day of work is a bit too late for me.. A waste, even, considering how dynamic these people's personalities are..
3) Rekindling my passion for teaching
Despite only getting two classes which amount to one and a half hours' worth of teaching, I've never been more determined of what I want to be in the future.. The job is stressful and it doesn't help that people generally have a very low regard for this profession.. But I adamantly feel that this is the job for me, and I will do anything in my power to make sure my dream comes true..
4) Having the computer lab to yourself
All 5 of us had so much fun 'conquering' the lab.. We could practically do anything we wanted to plus.. F was totally delirious about getting a 2 megabytes per second, unscreened, direct connection to the Internet.. Everybody was downloading tonnes of stuff.. Except for me.. Refer to negative point no 4..
[ NEGATIVES ]
1) Can you read: unfair?
I'm still pissed off that the boys got to stay in Tan Sri Halim Saad's guesthouse and the student affairs' manager's bungalow while we girls were stuck with the staff's apartment.. Staying over their place for one night didn't quell my feelings but rather made me fume even more.. Grr..
2) My *$^!*#@ network card!!
I found out that I brought it after all but it still couldn't connect my laptop to the network.. So it's confirmed that my card is faulty.. again.. Grr.. Everybody else was having a blast downloading all sorts of things.. From a whole series of Saturday Night Live to every Ali G interview.. Me? I had to contend with the lab's filtering software which wouldn't even allow me to access Blogger's admin area properly.. Grr..
3) The boredom of sitting idle. All. Day. Long.
I admit that I don't know a lot about computers despite me choosing IT as my career field.. But it would really help if we could learn and understand even a hint of what the technophiles in our group, namely E and F, were saying to Mr. A.. It's a vey humbling experience.. It just shows me that I've still got so much to learn.. And standing still while your teammates do tasks that you're not capable of doing just makes you feel worse..
4) My whining nature.
I never was good at keeping my mouth shut.. I keep complaining about this and that even though at the back of my mind, I know I should be thankful for what I have.. Sometimes I focus too much on the small details that I totally miss out on the bigger picture..
Overall, it was quite an experience.. It's definitely something I won't be forgetting any time soon.. But would I do it all over again? Hmm.. I really I hope I wouldn't need to answer that question :P
